Bread slicers anyone ?
« on: June 24, 2010, 02:55:42 AM »
I'm obviously getting more clumsy with time and I'm finding slicing the sourdough loaves in particular a bit dangerous. The 'boules' are fine to start with, but when I get to the last third of the loaf, I'm likely to take my finger with the slice (and indeed have done some damage in that area).

Does anyone have a bread slicer? If yes, are they any good? Is there a particular make that is recommended (I admit the ones I've seen look eve more dangerous than my bread knife)  :(

The absolute best bread slicer I've ever used isn't even a bread slicer...it's a deli meat slicer.  The home version of the meat slicer you see in your local deli does a great job of slicing even soft sandwich bread (my bread looks exactly like the stuff in the store but tastes way better).  You can vary the slice thickness and when you're all done you can slice up your favorite deli meat to go on it!  We use ours several times a week just to slice bread now.

Hi Blue

Ulrike recommended this one to me made by Bosch
in this thread. I haven't ordered one yet. I think about it though  :hmm:

My slicer looks the same as the one Ulrike has, but it's a Braun.
It was purchased in 1976 never had and any problems with it and it gets
used every day, breads, meat, cheese etc.....also it is still the same blade.

Zeb, qahtan (and Ulrike), that is one serious looking slicer - I shall amazon my way to it as soon as I can ..... I've just ordered my breadstone so I shall have to be a little patient  ;)

I don´t know how common slicers are in other countries, but here I can find a non elecrical at almost any fleamarket. My parents have one that they bought in the 60:ies and my dad use it to slice bread on.
I believe in knives.....I have a great bread slicing knife, it´s so big that crocodile dundee would not show me his one....

It´s an "arcos"
