I mellowed myself into trouble.....
« on: June 25, 2010, 02:58:46 PM »
Just realized that it takes 4 to 5 days for the barley to sprout...    noway

Oh, well - I will still make it, but will have to invade the month of July for that.  So much for careful attention to details...............

Did you find some viable barley in the end, Sally? I have kind of put this bread to one side for the time being.  Made interesting burnt flatbread in my new barbecue thingy tonight. Note to self, must read the manual.  Cooked the other two in the oven.

Yes, I found barley finally last week on a very nice store in town - however, of course I did not read the instructions carefully enough, and started the process too late

but.... guess what?   I just checked my "babies", and THEY ARE STARTING TO SPROUT!!!!!!!!

oh, how cute!   Still won't be in time for June, but next weekend for sure....

So what's not mellow about making June bread in July? I'd say that was extra mellow!

I used to think I was indecisive, but now I'm not so sure.

Paul, when it comes to mellow, it's been pretty hard to beat me....

:-)

the funny thing is, words like "control-freak",  "type-A personality",  "worry-wart" - are usually much more appropriate to describe SallyBR

This "mellow"' thing has been teaching me a lot, and baking is just one small part of it.... Cool, isn't it?

Oh, I am so touched!  Will make sure to have a speech ready for the big event!   :-)

Folks, I have a big mellow question for you:  do you think I could retard the beer bread overnight in the fridge?   No, I am not trying to mellow the recipe even further, but that would help me bring it to our table without warming up the house so much, I like to bake it in the morning

Ideas??????

Why not?  Maybe reduce the yeast in the final dough.... if you are planning a stay in the fridge.  :D

Good news!

Baked it this morning - no problems!   The bread was singing as it cooled, and at lunchtime I cut a slice to check the crumb, it is a bit tight, but I guess that's how this bread is supposed to be

the taste is AMAZING!   It baked to a nice reddish color, I wish I had scored it with more gusto.

Will not be blogging on it until mid week, I think, but.... just wanted to let you all know that "retarding" this one works fine

Sally - I'm with you on this one....still trying to sprout barley with no success.  But I'm going to try the unsprouted roasted barley.  I guess I may beat you to the Mellow Award  ;D......if I get to it.  The weather has been so hot and humid that bread baking has been quite a torture in kitchen.  I'm moving my bread baking to my dining table.  Looking forward to your post, as I'm also thinking about retarding the dough.

My barley did not want to sprout at all!
Finally found spray malt that I used, not the correct ingredient but made a good bread
